Erin Dewar is the proud owner-operator of The Middle Way Yoga. Erin first came to yoga when a fellow actor friend took her along to an early morning Mysore class before rehearsals for a stage play in early 2009. She remembers walking out feeling clear-headed, calm but alive! Erin went on to explore a variety of Ashtanga-based styles, as well as Bikram and Power Yoga. After moving from Australia to London and completing her 200Hr Yoga Teacher Training at Lumi Power Yoga in early 2014, Erin has taught a variety of classes for all levels across London and Hertfordshire. Also a qualified primary school teacher, Erin’s joy of working with children has seen her bring yoga to children both in and out of the school setting. In her personal search for balance and mindfulness, Erin has found a great passion for practicing and teaching the deeply restorative yin yoga and meditation.
Yoga is about people – it’s about connecting with yourself and those around you. It is a place where we can start to let go, to focus, to find balance and to challenge and explore the depths of our physical, mental and spiritual self. From this space, we can begin to walk through the world a little closer to our own truth.
Once an actor, sometimes primary school teacher, part time writer, always an Aussie, turned yogi and vegetarian who left the rat race of inner city living to move out to Hertfordshire on a replica dutch barge. Just call me ‘Sailor Yogi’.
I read recently about our struggle to define who we are and what we do in an honest way, and how this tends to get in the way of meaningful work. I’m still not comfortable calling myself a writer, for example, because it doesn’t feel legitimate, as in ‘I’m not writer enough’. Brene Brown says, ‘Overcoming self-doubt is all about believing we’re enough and letting go of what the world says we’re supposed to be and supposed to call ourselves.’ And she quotes another great thinker, theologian Howard Thurman, who says ‘Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.’
Making the move onto our beautiful boat, becoming a full time yoga teacher of dynamic flow, yin and children’s yoga and diving into the abyss of self-employment has been quite a ride towards that aliveness. And being deliberate about my work ie. ‘I want my work to be inspiring, contemplative and creative’; defining myself in the positive – ie. ‘I want to feel authentic and happy’ as opposed to ‘I don’t want to feel hungover and depressed’; and dancing with the intricate balance of yin and yang in all things eg. ‘Do I have the energy for that or do I need some time out?’ have become mantras in keeping myself accountable.
